Heinrich Barth

Biography

German explorer of Africa and scholar.

Barth is one of the greatest of the European explorers of Africa, as his scholarly preparation, ability to speak and write Arabic, learning African languages, and character meant that he carefully documented the details of the cultures he visited. He was among the first to comprehend the uses of oral history of peoples, and collected many. He established friendships with African rulers and scholars during his five years of travel (1850–1855). After the deaths of two European companions, he completed his travels with the aid of Africans. Afterwards, he wrote and published a five-volume account of his travels in both English and German. It has been invaluable for scholars of his time and since.

He died 25 November 1865.

Sy Scholfield cites same data from birth record quoted in "Mittheilungen aus Justus Perthes' geographischer Anstalt über wichtige neue Erforschungen auf dem Gesammtgebiete der Geographie, Volume 12" by August Petermann (Justus Perthes, 1866), p. 44:

"Zudem erhalten wir aus Hamburg folgende Zuschrift: „Laut Taufregister der hiesigen Kirche St. Nicolai ward Johann Heinrich Barth, ehelicher Sohn des hiesigen Bürgers und Knochenhauer- (Schlachter-)meisters am Hopfenmarkte Johann Christoph Heinrich Barth (gest. 3. Februar 1821 Abends 11 Uhr geboren und am 1. April 1821 von Herrn Pastor Eckermaun getauft. In den Wöchentlichen gemeinnützigen (jetzt Hamburger) Nachrichten Nr. 43, Montag den 19. Februar 1821, findet sich folgende Anzeige: „Heute wurde i meine Frau von einem gesunden Knaben glücklich entbunden. Hamburg, 16. Februar 1821. J. C. H. Barth."

In the Weekly profit (now Hamburg) News No. 43, Monday, February 19, 1821, we find the following message: "Today my wife happily delivered a healthy boy. Hamburg, February 16, 1821. J. C. H. Barth.
