Biography
British scientist and alchemist, the tutor of Elias Ashmole whom he first met in 1651. The following year, Backhouse adopted Ashmole as his spiritual son, disclosing the secret of the Philosopher’s Stone by way of syllables. Ashmole’s diary of 13 May 1653 records that his adopted alchemical father, William Backhouse, "lying sick in Fleetestreete over against St. Duncan's Church, and not knowing whether he should live or die, about eleven o'clock, told me in Syllables the true matter of the Philosophers stone which he bequeathed to me as a legacy." Even Robert Boyle, generally regarded as a pillar of the skeptical enlightenment and a pillar of the other contemporary Fellowship, the Royal Society, professed his belief in materials, for example menstruum peracutum, which would genuinely effect transformations.
Born in Swallowfield, Berks, Backhouse married Ann Richards; their daughter Flora married William Bishop of S Warnborough, Hants. He died on 5/30/1662.
