One of the most influential German journalists, founder and part-owner of Der Spiegel magazine.
An amateur historian, Augstein published several successful books, among them Preußens Friedrich und die Deutschen (1981, Otto von Bismarck (1990), and about his lifetime opponent, Überlebensgroß Herr Strauß. Ein Spiegelbild (1983).
Augstein married five times, the last time in 2000. He died on 7 November 2002 from pneumonia and was buried on the island of Sylt.

On 13 Jan. 2015 Sy Scholfield changed the time to 2:30 a.m. (and changed the rating from C to B) quoting from "Rudolf Augstein: Biographie" by Peter Merseburger (Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt, 2007), p. 17: "Das Licht der Welt erblickt er in der Hebammen-Lehranstalt Hannover am 5. November 1923 morgens um zweieinhalb Uhr als das sechste Kind seiner Mutter Gertrude Maria, geb. Staaden, und des Kaufmanns Friedrich Franz Maria Augstein."
Translation: "He first saw the light of the world at the midwifery educational institution in Hanover on 5 November 1923 in the morning at half past two o'clock as the sixth child of his mother Gertrude Maria, nee Staaden, and the merchant Friedrich Franz Maria Augstein."
