Biography
American politician, a liberal Dem. leader of the "new South." The family was abandoned by his dad when he was born. As a kid, he set his sights on political office. Deeply religious, a non-smoker or drinker, he opposed segregationist forces in his own party. He served in the U.S. Army in 1946 and saw action in Korea in 1951. Charismatic, he radiates sincerity and concern. Entering politics, he was elected State Representative 1958, Senator 1962-70, Governor of Florida 1971-79.
