Biography
American female jockey, two time Longacres champion in 1986 and 1988, and more.
Born to a US Navy dad, she and her family moved around overseas quite a lot. At age 16, she left her family in Sardinia to work on an English farm where she became familiar with horses. The family subsequently moved to Los Angeles and she took up horse racing while she earned her high school equivalency. She married at age 19 and subsequently divorced. In 1985 she moved to Seattle in order to pursue better opportunities for female jockeys to race. She won her first race on June 6, 1985 at Longacres. The 4'11" 100 pound jockey was seriously injured in 1988 at Bay Meadows when she was thrown onto her head and compressed her neck vertebrae. The injury did not keep her off horses for long and she returned after a month of recuperation. On April 1, 1999, she married fellow jockey Gary Baze.
Events
- Work : Prize 1986 (First championship at Longacres)
- Relationship : Marriage 1 April 1999 (To Gary Baze)
Source Notes
Sy Scholfield submitted an article on Don James (q.v.) which contained her birth data but which did not give the place of her birth. As she was the child of a military family, PT suspects she was born abroad
