Biography
Tibetan religious figure, known as His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa. The youngest of seven children, including five sisters whose parents are nomadic yak herders, his birth was foretold to his parents who promised to place him in the care of a spiritual teacher who recognized his specialness. As a very young child, Apo Gaga's clairvoyance was evident and greatly respected.. His name means "happy, happy one."

(Lhasa L&L: 29n40, 91e09). ASC: 4 Cancer. RR: B. Data from Ken Holmes [1] who in his book Karmapa" (Forres, Scotland: Altea, 1995) states: "The night before the birth, in late June, 1985, the father saw rainbows over the tent and was surprised, for the
sun had already disappeared behind the mountains. The baby was born the next day without pain or dif[f]iculty, just before the first golden rays of sunlight burst into the tent. At the same time, a cuckoo landed on the yak-hair tent and sang" [2]. Mick Brown in his book "The Dance of 17 Lives: The Incredible True Story of
Tibet's 17th Karmapa" (London: Bloomsbury, 2004) quotes the boy’s mother for a similar time and specifies the date: "born shortly before sunrise next morning, on 26 June 1985" (p. 150). His official website clarifies the date: "His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa turned 18 years old on June 26, 2003, according [to] the Western traditions of counting birthdays."
