Biography
American spy who rose to a powerful position in CIA Counter-Intelligence, where he instigated witch hunts. With a complicated and divisive mind, obsessive and suspicious, in the '60s and '70s he became increasingly paranoid and deeply involved in notorious CIA investigations.
Rarely photographed himself, Angleton launched projects which led to the death of those whom he suspected, such as having Russians defectors who were working for the CIA sent back to Russia. He stated publicly that the CIA was infiltrated by moles.
In 1974, when his own motives and methods became suspect of a lack of rationale judgment, he was dismissed. Angleton died that year of cancer, age 57.
