Biography
American actor, director and screenwriter, he began acting professionally on stage in 1954 after graduating from UCLA with a bachelor's in theatre arts. After several plays he turned to film and from there turned to directing in the early 1960s. He has won several awards. Perhaps his best known role was that of a gang leader in "Rebel Without a Cause" with James Dean (1955).
Suffering from Parkinson's disease, he died on June 27, 2010 in Los Angeles.
