Biography
American politician , a former two-term Governor of Tennessee. He took over in 1979 as governor from a scandal-ridden administration.
He declared his presidential candidacy on 9/28/1995, 9:00 AM, Maryville, TN, but did not continue in the race. He finished a strong third in the Iowa caucuses and a whisper behind Dole in New Hampshire, before Dole won the Republican nomination.
Still with the big picture in mind, he declared his candidacy once more on 3/09/1999 for the contest in 2000. He argues that his agenda to improve schools, family incomes and the nation's security stands well against Bush (Jr.) and Dole (Libby). He may be the best organized candidate and has a history of strong fund-raising.
