Biography
American nightclub fire that killed 492 people and severely injured nearly two hundred others. On the night of the fire, the club was filled with over 1000 people, over capacity. When fire broke out, possibly due to a lit match used by an employee changing a light bulb. Within 15 minutes, the entire scene was engulfed in flames. The decorations were highly flammable and the two main doors, against which the panicked dancers and diners pushed to try to escape, were revolving doors, that turned inward. After this tragedy in which over half the attendees were killed, fire codes and safety measures were changed, including a requirement that all doors open outward.
According to the article from which the time is taken, the Coconut Grove nightclub first opened on October 27, 1927 at 5:30 PM EST in Boston ,MA.
