Biography

Italian shipwreck, the cruise ship set off from the Italian port of Civitavecchia at about 7 PM local time. At 9:30 PM, it hit rocks off the coast of the island of Giglio. With a damaged hull, the liner started tp take on water and the captain attempted to turn the ship toward the island's port. The ship listed and began to sink. At 10:10 the abandon ship signal was sounded and passengers, in the dark, attempted to find life vests and life boats. Many jumped into the lifeboats or plunged into the icy waters. The captain, Francesco Schettino, was placed under arrest as authorties attempted to piece together the events that led to the accident and assess the the captain's culpability. As of a few days after the accident, 11 people had died and over 20 were still missing.
