Biography
Chicago fire that occurred as a result of a very dry summer and a very strong wind that fanned the flames. The fire started in or near the barn owned by Mrs. O'Leary and tore through the town. The ground was so hot that it took two or three days for a survey of the damage to be done. Popular legend has it that her cow kicked over a lantern, igniting the blaze.
By the time the fire was over, it had devastated a swath about four miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide--more than two thousand acres. Somewhere between two and three hundred people lost their lives and eighteen thousand buildings were gone, amounting to about two hundred million dollars in property damage.
