Argentine nightclub fire begun after concert goers set off fireworks inside the two-level nightclub. The ceiling ignited and a stampede ensued, with people running into a locked door unable to leave the building.
At least 175 people were killed and 700 injured. The fire was contained in a relatively short time but a combination of smoke inhalation and suffocation as well as the crush of people at the locked exit were blamed for most of the deaths and injuries.
The concert-turned-tragedy featured a local band called Los Callejeros and was held at the Republica Cro Magnon club in Buenos Aires. City officials estimated that 4-5,000 people had been squeezed into the club which only measured about 16,000 square feet. The owner was arrested the day after the tragedy.
PT quotes CNN news report for approximate time of the start of the fire. "The fire began about 11 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) on Thursday during a rock concert in the Republica Cro Magnon disco, in the Once section of Buenos Aires, according to a spokesman in the mayor's office."
