American bridge collapse over the Mississippi River, sending several vehicles into the river or on pavement below, killing 13 people and injuring 145.
The bridge bearing eight lanes of traffic over the Mississippi connects Minneapolis with St. Paul. A 500-foot span collapsed at rush hour and crashed into the river over 60 feet below, taking with it some of the vehicles and leaving others stranded on the still-connected parts of the bridge while other vehicles including a school bus full of children crashed into barriers or slanted sections of pavement that were ripped up by the collapse. Divers worked for days trying to recover bodies and vehicles submerged in river with its fast-moving current. Many vehicles caught fire and one tractor-trailer was cut in half.
At 6:05 PM witnesses felt the earth shake and watched as the concrete-and-steel truss bridge rippled from south to north and then broke apart.
The bridge was declared structurally deficient but "not unsafe" in 1990.
