The license covers Astrodatabank (ADB) export data provided as downloadable XML files. There are two license variants:
The variant that applies to this license is identified by the order item code above ([license item]).
The license is granted to users who purchase a subscription. Subscriptions are time-limited. Currently 1-year licenses (SADBY1 or SADNY1) and 5-year licenses (SADBY5 or SADNY5) are offered.
The license grants the licensee the right to use ADB data from the export XML files in their software applications, their web services, and their astrological research.
The right to use ADB data in software applications or web services ends when the license period expires. After expiry, the licensee is obliged to stop offering their software applications or web services insofar as ADB data are made available as part of the software or the service.
Research usages that do not make detailed ADB data accessible, but only anonymized statistics, may continue after the license has expired.
Licensees with an active license can download the most current ADB export files from their account on www.astro.com. The file names offered for download indicate the date of the latest export. A typical file name is adb_export_260918_1139.zip, which contains adb_export_260918_1139.xml, an export created on 2026/09/18 at 11:39 Swiss time.
The zip files made available for download are encrypted with a licensee-specific password shown as part of the download action. A new password is generated when the file date changes.
The format of the XML is described in documents provided in the adbexport folder, https://www.astro.com/adbexport/, and, possibly outdated, in https://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Help:XML_export_format.
The ADB data accessed under this license must be kept confidential by the licensee. Their software applications or web services may show data for individual database records, but must not make large subsets of the data available for copying or download.
The licensee has no right to redistribute ADB data files for use outside their own applications, and must not remove the <license_data> element from the data files.
Applicable for license variant SADB, not for license variant SADN:
Licensees who purchase the SADB license undertake to include a back-link to the corresponding ADB page for each data record whose content they show in their application or web service. The link is contained in the XML field <adb_link> of each <adb_entry> record.
Licensees who purchase the SADN license are under no such obligation. They may optionally include a back-link to the corresponding ADB page, using the same <adb_link> field, but are not required to do so.
Licensees are obliged to keep the ADB data in their applications current. They must download the latest version of the ADB export file at least once every six months, and update the data in their applications from it. Besides new records, each update also improves the quality of existing data.
Each export file contains, near its end, a list of deleted records in the XML field <deleted_records>, together with a summary count in the <adb_entry_count> element, for example <adb_entry_count count="81825" del_count="316" />. Licensees are obliged to delete these records from their own database. Records are deleted mainly for two reasons: removal of duplicate entries, and removal at the request of the person represented in the record.
Subscription prices are given in Swiss Francs (CHF). At the time of purchase, the Astrodienst online shop converts the CHF price to EUR or USD, depending on the subscriber's country.
Licensees receive reminders by email regarding the pending expiry of their license before it expires, sent to the email address on file in their astro.com user account. When a license is renewed before its expiry date, the new license period is appended to the existing one. Example: if a license due to expire on 30 November 2027 is renewed during October 2027, the new expiry date will be 30 November 2028.
This license is granted under Swiss contract law. The place of jurisdiction for disputes arising from this contract is Meilen, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland.
